Painting Your Porch or Patio

5 Steps for Professional Results.

Your front porch is the face of your home. Your back patio is entertainment central in warmer weather for family and friends to gather. When it comes to painting these areas of your home, there are many factors to consider. Here’s a handy list of things to keep in mind when undertaking such a project.

Make a List.

Having all of your materials ready will save you time and effort. Make sure protective equipment is available and used when required. Having gloves, eye protection and face masks are always a good idea when working with corrosive materials and dust. Always choose safety first!

First Steps.

Clearing the area of any furniture, gazebos, planters or BBQs is the first step. Then start with a good sweep so you can assess any areas in need of repair or special attention prior to paint or staining. Ensuring poles, beams and joists remain in good condition is important to the longevity of your porch or patio. Check for any rust or rot, and repair or replace any areas of concern as needed.

Custom built & maintenance free.

Cleaning for Success.

Ensure you clean up any repair or maintenance tools and debris once you are finished so you are ready to move on to the next phase of your project. Making sure that all surfaces are thoroughly cleaned prior to any application is critical. After all scraping and sanding of old paint or stain is completed, consider scrubbing with a mild cleaner suitable for wood or even a power washer. Properly prepping your surface is key to achieving the best possible results.

To Paint or Stain.

There are many things to decide on when refinishing your porch or patio. Paint or stain, colour, texturing and technique. The list goes on. The first place to start is by looking at your surface. If there is any residual stain or paint, then priming and painting may be your best bet. How much traffic will your deck or patio see? A durable paint might be the answer. If you have a lot of imperfections, then again, paint is the best choice. When your deck is new or in good condition, then absolutely, a stain would be a great option. Then there is the huge selection of colours to choose from. Having paint swatches of your home’s existing exterior finishes will help you find the perfect match when out researching colours and products.

Priming is Key.

After all repairs and cleanup of your project are completed, the surface is now prepared to accept paint or stain. If you plan to paint then now it’s time for priming. Priming allows the paint to adhere well to the surface while hiding repair work and any other imperfections. Allow the primer to completely dry before cleaning the surface and proceeding to painting or staining. Priming before paint will take your project to the next level with a professionally finished look.

Looking for Railing Options? Grey Bruce Has a Sunspace Solution.

Ready for Paint.

Once you have chosen your product to apply to your porch or patio, you need to decide on how to apply it. For the long flat surfaces of your board, a sturdy roller will do the job efficiently. Then a good old paint brush is your best bet for getting in between all of your boards and finishing around corners and edges. Always check manufacturer and product recommendations to ensure you are using the appropriate materials and products for your project.

Once the surface has dried and cured completely, all you have to do is setup and enjoy your new space!

Winterize your Sunroom

With the cold weather quickly approaching, you may be starting to feel sad & down because you won’t be able to spend as much time in your Sunroom. Don’t get down just yet! We have a few tips and ways that will let you enjoy your Sunroom this winter. With a few simple steps and some work, you’ll be able to enjoy your Sunroom while watching the first snow fall.

Touch Ups

Go around your Sunroom and look for cracks and holes where the cold weather might be able to seep in. Get some caulking and go around your room filling those cracks and holes with some caulking. If you have larger holes or cracks & spaces around your windows, contact Grey Bruce Patio Enclosures about how we can help you fix the spaces.

Thermal Drapes

Hanging drapes in your Sunroom may sound like the opposite reason you put up a Sunroom, but if you go out and purchase some thermal drapes and use the drapes to keep the cold out and the heat in during the night and times when you’re not home. Your Sunroom will be much warmer when you do go to spend time in it.

Heaters

Install some baseboard heaters in your Sunroom if you don’t want to have 3 or 4 mini heaters plugged in and spread out throughout your Sunroom. This way you will be able to enjoy your Sunroom for years to come without the added cost of constantly having to buy plug in heaters.

Rugs & Blankets

As always, the easiest way to add some extra warmth to every Sunroom during the cooler seasons are to add a large thermal area rug and a few warm fuzzy blankets or heated blankets. This option may not heat your Sunroom up but it will go a long way for keeping your feet and your body warm while your spending time in your Sunroom.

Get your Home Ready for Fall – Part 2

Fall is one of the most beautiful times of the year with all the changing colours of the leaves and the sun shining through while still being warm enough to spend a few hours outdoors without being to cold. The one thing that we all dread is what follows after all the leaves have fallen off the trees… winter & snow.

Check your windows

If you have violent winter storms it might be a good idea to make sure you have good windows. If you are worried still you can always install storm windows or doors. Be sure to check the caulking and seals around the window and repair anything you may be unsure of.

Stock up on Firewood

If you have a fireplace or are planning on getting a fireplace for the winter now is a great time to start gathering fire wood. Make sure you stock up enough for the winter and store it in a cool dry place away from your house. You will also want to make sure you clean your fireplace and chimney before it’s to late.

Sunroom prep

Closing your Sunroom for the winter is one of the moments you probably leave for last, but it is still just as important. Cool drafts can sneak in from your Sunroom just as easily as having a small draft around a door. Regardless of when you plan on closing your Sunroom for the winter, there are still a few things you may want to do now to help you prolong the enjoyment of your Sunroom. Add an area carpet to keep the floors warmer, or bring in an extra heat source like a heater with a couple of heated blankets. You will still want to ensure that the entrance from your Sunroom to your home is well insulated so make sure there are no cracks or drafts around the door.

Get your Home Ready for Fall – Part 1

With the official first day of Autumn right around the corner, now is the time when many of us start fixing up our homes for Fall.

There always seems to be so many things to do to get your home ready for the cold weather and no matter how much we prepare, there always seems to be 1 or 2 things we missed doing before the snow falls. We’ve put together a few items to remember to check off on your checklist to get your home ready for Fall.

Make sure the cold air won’t sneak in

Did you notice last winter that certain areas of your home were colder than others? That may be a result of a small hole or draft in the area that was letting the cold air in. Check around your home for drafts and holes. A great way to find a draft in your home is to take a lit candle and hold it around your windows, doors and other place and if it flickers, there’s most likely a draft.

Make sure you have Heat!

Have you ever been bundled up in blankets upon blanket trying to stay warm inside your home in the dead of winter because your furnace broke? If you haven’t, consider yourself lucky! It’s always good to have your furnace inspected to make sure it’s working properly and won’t break down when you need it most. Even if you have had it inspected get some back up in case it does break down. Try purchasing a couple external plug in heaters that you could use to keep you warm until the maintenance worker fixes your furnace.

Check your roof!

Make sure there’s no leaks, holes or missing shingles on your roof. The roof is one of the areas of your home that is not so easy to fix in the winter. No one is going to climb up on your slippery cold roof in the middle of winter for several days to fix a leak or hole, so make sure you have someone check it out before the snow falls.

There is often so much to do to get ready for the winter that we thought we’d do a part 2 to help you ensure your home & Sunroom is ready for winter and the snow. Checkout Get your Home ready for Fall – Part 2 next month for other ways to get your home & Sunroom ready for the cold weather!

Adding Additional Heat Sources to your Sunroom

Looking for ways to enjoy your Sunroom through fall & winter without having to tear it down and build a 3 or 4 season Sunroom? There are a few ways to stay warm in your Sunroom as the weather starts to cool down. Although these options may not allow you to spend half a day in your Sunroom in the middle of winter, you will still be able to get some enjoyment from your Sunroom with these options.

Add a Fireplace

Regardless if you decide to build a fireplace into your sunroom or you opt in for a stand-alone fireplace that’s plug and play. The benefit of having a stand-alone fireplace is that you’ll be able to move it almost anywhere, which means that when you’re all snuggled up in the winter you can move the fireplace closer to you, keeping you toasty warm.

Carpets

Adding a warm & fuzzy thermal carpet to your Sunroom during the winter will help keep your feet warm while walking into the Sunroom. Look for a good quality carpet that can be easily moved out of the way when summer rolls back around. The carpet doesn’t have to cover the entire floor in your Sunroom, but it should cover a large enough space that you won’t have to run across the floor to reach the warm carpet.

Insulated Roof

Something you can do at the time of installing your Sunroom is to get your roof insulated, it will make a world of difference when the snow starts to fall. An insulated roof is not always a bad thing for the summer months either, it will keep your room cooler during summer and still be warmer during winter.

Heated Blankets

A simple solution to keeping warm through fall & into winter is with a heated or a couple of heated blankets. Adding some heated blankets to your Sunroom in the winter along with the other above options will ensure you are still able to enjoy your Sunroom almost all year round!

Contact Grey Bruce Patio Enclosures for more information on the various types of Sunrooms you can choose from or for other way to heat your Sunroom during that fall & winter months.

Things to decide before adding a Sunroom to your home

Whether you are wanting a Screen Room, WeatherMaster Sunroom or a Three or Four Season Sunroom there may be a few decisions you should think about and make before contacting your local Sunroom dealer.

To help make this process as simple for you as possible, we have compiled some of the decisions you should make before adding a Sunroom to your home. Some of what we discuss below may not apply to you and your home for a few reasons. If at anytime through your decision process you have questions contact Grey Bruce Patio Enclosures and speak to one of our experts.

Location, Location, Location

Picking and deciding on the optimal spot for your Sunroom may be one of the most crucial steps throughout this process. If your Sunroom gets to much sun you’ll be to hot and if there’s not enough sun then your Sunroom may be to cold and you won’t get a whole lot of enjoyment out of it.

In northern Canada, a southern facing Sunroom may be the best as your Sunroom will receive the most light each day, however if your closer to southern Canada a southern facing Sunroom could mean that you will need additional cooling depending on the Sunroom you choose.

An eastern facing Sunroom will give you a bit of both sun & shade with the sunlight in the morning and shade the rest of the day. If your looking to enjoy the sun in your Sunroom in the afternoon this option may not be for you. If the afternoon sun is what you are looking for then you should consider a western facing Sunroom, just be aware that the afternoon sun can make your Sunroom pretty hot.

If your have only 1 option for the location of your Sunroom you may want to consider some of the below so you are still able to enjoy your Sunroom:

  • Have a lot of airflow options for when your Sunroom gets to warm.
  • Install ceiling fans to keep the air circulation for optimum air flow.
  • Consider adding some shades for the days when the sun is bright and hot.
  • Look for a small heater for the cooler spring or fall days to keep your Sunroom warm.

For more information about some things to decide before you add a Sunroom or for any questions you have contact Grey Bruce Patio Enclosures your local Owen Sound Sunspace Sunrooms Dealer.
